What is Gum Disease?
When your gum tissue becomes infected by harmful oral bacteria, the result is gum disease. Early on, the condition may not seem too serious; in fact, an improved oral hygiene routine may be enough to address it. But if gum disease remains untreated, it can eventually reach an advanced stage known as periodontitis. Once it does, it will be beyond the point where it can be cured, and it can have a severe negative impact on your oral health.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
Do your gums appear to be redder than normal? Are they unusually swollen? Do they often bleed when you brush your teeth? Are your teeth looking longer than normal? Has your bite changed? Have any of your permanent teeth come loose? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then you could have gum disease and should make an appointment at our office as soon as you can.
How Do We Treat Gum Disease?
There’s more than one kind of gum disease treatment. Figuring out which one is the best choice in your particular situation requires us to examine your mouth and determine the severity of your condition. We will make sure that you have a full understanding of your options before you need to make any decisions. Below, you’ll find examples of how we treat gum disease.
Scaling & Root Planing
Oftentimes gum disease calls for a deep cleaning to get rid of the bacteria that is contributing to the infection. The first step is scaling, which is when we carefully remove any plaque or tartar that has accumulated beneath your gumline. After that, we can perform a root planing procedure, smoothing out the tooth roots to make it easier for the gums to reattach.
Antibiotic Treatment
In addition to deep cleanings, we might also suggest antibiotic treatment. Our practice uses Arestin, an antibiotic consisting of multiple microspheres. Arestin is applied to the pockets that have formed due to gum disease; over the course of several weeks, the microspheres will release medication that fights the bacteria living in the gums. Thanks to Arestin, our practice has an effective way to address gum disease at its source.
